今回は「〜以外」という言葉について学びましょう。ではまず2つの表現のうちどちらが、「私は、あなたの授業で英語以外にもたくさんのことを学んだ。」に合っているか選んでみましょう。
1. I learned many things in your class except English. 2. I learned many things in your class besides English.
皆さん正解は解りましたか？ 正解は2番です。 日本語の「〜以外」に当たる英語の表現はいくつかあります。例えば「A以外にも〜」と追加したいときは、exceptではなく、besides(または as well as) を使います。 例えば、「私は日本と中国以外にも、たくさんのアジア諸国に行ったことがある。」とう文は;
Besides Japan and China, I have also been to a lot of other countries in Asia. As well as Japan and China, I have also been to a lot of other countries in Asia.
というふうになります。
一方、exceptは「A以外は〜」のように、Aだけを「除外」したいときに使います。例えば、「私以外の家族全員がスポーツ好きだ。」の場合は;
Everyone in my family expect me likes sports. Everyone in my family likes sports expect me.
となります。
「追加」と「除外」、両方の意味で使える表現は apart from… と other than… です。 「追加」Apart from / other than the shops, there are lots of really interesting things to see in Tokyo. (東京にはお店以外にも面白いものがたくさんある。) 「除外」Apart from / other than me, everyone in the club loves karaoke. (クラブのメンバーは私以外、みんなカラオケが大好きだ。)
となり、少しややこしいですが、よく使う表現なので覚えておきましょうね♪
