New Lessons Added to EP.express! by Jim Usher

Good news everyone – all 21 lessons for Express Yourself! Year 2 Semester 2 are now available online! Newly uploaded lessons include such topics as hotels, where we will compare Western-style hotels to Japanese ryokan and talk about our personal preferences, and air travel, in which we will discuss where we would like to travel if we could go anywhere and why some people are afraid of flying.

There are also a couple of upcoming lessons specific to Japan and Japanese culture. In Lesson 38, we will be looking at Japanese idols – who was popular in the past, who is popular now, and which idol you would most like to meet. In Lesson 39, we will be speaking on the topic of the islands of Japan – where we live now and where we have lived, which places we have visited, and what it means to live in an island nation.

There is even a lesson on the course itself, Express Yourself! In the final lesson of the year, you can tell us all about which topics you enjoyed the most and which of your classmates’ stories you have found to be the most interesting, compelling, or entertaining.

If you haven’t already had a look through your booklet, why not have a look online at some of the upcoming lessons in the remainder of the year? Click on the following link to visit the Express Yourself website: https://english-please.express/myconversations/

See you in the classroom! We look forward to hearing all of your opinions and stories!

How to comment and reply to your EY Express Teacher. by Jon Hay

EY Express is a highly effective course that promotes output from students. Every week students are asked to write compositions for topics that are different each week with the view to bring that work to their lesson and to use it as an aid in speaking in that class. But, did you know that teachers also write compositions? Teachers also like to comment on their student’s compositions too! So, why not respond? If you are not sure how, don’t worry! This article will continue with a step-by-step guide to commenting on your teacher’s composition and how to reply to your teacher’s comment on your composition. Before we get started, unfortunately it must be noted, students are not permitted to see other student’s compositions due to privacy matters. English-Please takes all students privacy very seriously. Here is the step-by-step guide on how to comment on a teacher’s composition or how to reply to a comment on your composition.

1.Click on “Compositions”.
2.Find the latest piece that you wrote and check to see if a comment has been left.
3.Click on “View Composition”.
4.Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you should find the comments section under the “Tough Vocabulary”.
5.After reading the comments you can reply in the box below the last comment. It really only takes 5 steps in order to leave a comment, so please feel welcome to correspond with your teacher. We are looking forward to hearing from you.

Native Media in December by Jon Hay

In December, Native Media has three exciting, interesting, and thought-provoking topics.
In the first week of December, Lesson 29 looks at the slightly controversial topic of getting tattoos in Japan. In this lesson’s clip we see a British man getting a tattoo in Japan and we see and hear some of the Japanese attitudes towards tattoos.
In the second week which is Lesson 30, we take time to examine whether it is legal for teachers to physically discipline students. This clip highlights the attitudes in The United States of America towards corporal punishment and its legality.
In the last week of December, Greta Thunberg is the focus of Lesson 31. But who is she, why is she famous, and why was she awarded Time Magazine’s “Person of the Year” award in 2019? This Native Media lesson will tell you all about Miss Thunberg.
We hope you enjoy the lessons.

Shout Out to My Wednesday Afternoon Private by Jim Usher

I’d just like to take a moment to say how well I think my Wednesday afternoon Express Yourself private student is doing. She has been with us a little over a year now and has a near perfect attendance record, having only needed to take a handful of absences here and there. In that time, she has consistently submitted compositions for each of the lessons, demonstrating both a good understanding of how to structure a written response to a question and also a good use of natural phrasing and idiomatic speech. During the in-class conversation, she always tries to paraphrase what she has said in her composition, never simply just reading whatever it is she wrote in a given week. She has also taken it upon herself to study for the Eiken test and will be sitting the exam some time in the near future! So, N-san, keep up the great work – you are a model student and I wish you all the best in your studies. Good luck on the test!

Meet Your Sensei!

It’s the return of “Meet Your Sensei!”, with this month’s teacher – Antonio sensei!

Q: Where are you from? What’s your favorite thing about your home country?

A: I was born in Jakarta, Indonesia but grew up in multiple countries. One thing about Indonesia that I love the most would be the diversity and taste of its food. My stomach used to be immune to spicy food, but after living in Japan for more than 6 years, I can’t handle it anymore!

Q: What did you enjoy doing when you were a kid?

A: I’ve really enjoyed playing the drums since when I was 5 years old. My mother used to be a piano teacher and she wanted everyone in our family to master at least one musical instrument. I fell in love with drums since the first time I learned how to hit the snare and bass drum.

Q: What did you do before becoming an English teacher?

A: I was studying about Japanese society and global culture at Doshisha University of Kyoto. I spent a lot of time traveling across Japan and other countries in Asia when I was still at University. While I was still in college, I taught both adults and children many aspects of the English language. One of the reasons why I am working at EP! right now is because I believe that our institution has multiple programs that will shape our student’s way of learning and way of communicating with people from all over the world.

Q: What’s your favorite Japanese food?

A: My all-time favorite Japanese food would be the A5 Wagyu ribeye roast served with crispy garlic and asparagus. Some people believe that we should eat to live but this food makes me live to eat!

Q: Why did you want to live in Japan?

A: One of the things that I enjoy doing is learning new languages. I found the Japanese language to be very rich and fascinating when I first visited Japan back in 2010. Realizing how safe the country is and how polite people are, I wanted to try living in Japan for at least two years. I can’t imagine living in another country after experiencing life here for 6 years now!

A Reminder to Update Zoom

Hello everyone. This is just a reminder for those of you who are still taking classes over Zoom – or for those who are thinking of starting up online classes again – that for the best Zoom experience you need to keep the application up to date. We here at English-Please! always download and install the latest Zoom updates once they become available. If you are finding you are having connection problems, things are running slower than exected during your online lessons, or you are experiencing any other issues you cannot explain, it could be you are not running the latest version of Zoom.

Updating Zoom is very easy but the method of getting the latest updates will differ depending on how you use Zoom. If you are using it from a desktop computer, be it a PC or a Mac, you can check for updates within the application. After signing in, click on the avatar image in the top right-hand corner, then click on “Check for Updates”. A pop-up window will then open, either telling you that you are running the latest version of Zoom or that an update is available. Click “Update” and follow the on-screen instructions to install the latest version.

If you are using Zoom on a tablet or smartphone, you can update the Zoom app the same way you update any other app. For iOS users, go in to the App Store and find the Zoom application in the list of apps installed on your device. If it appears with the word “Update” next to it, tap “Update” and the latest version will be installed. For Android users, go in to the Google Play Store, find the Zoom app listed and tap “Update”.

And that’s all there is to it. If you don’t keep the Zoom application updated, you will probably still be okay to use it for online lessons. However, it is good practice to keep all the applications you use regularly up to date, and it should help to limit the number of problems you encounter while taking lessons online. Thanks everyone, and see you in the Zoomrooms!

現在もZoomを使って授業を受けている生徒様や、これからオンライン授業を始めようと検討されている方に向けて、Zoomの能率アップのため、アプリケーションのアップデートをしていただくようお願い致します。English-Please!
