It’s the return of “Meet Your Sensei!”, with this month’s teacher – Gail sensei!
Q: Where are you from? What’s your favorite thing about your home country?
I am from South Africa. There are so many things I like about my home country, it’s impossible to choose only one. One of my favourite things is biltong, which is cured beef with spices. It is hugely popular and best eaten with a glass of wine while watching the rugby! Another of my favourite things is what we call in South Africa a braai, or a barbecue. We usually have a variety of meat and loads of salad, while sitting outside enjoying the fabulous weather.
Q: What did you enjoy doing when you were a kid?
When I was a kid we spent most of our time outdoors. Climbing trees, riding bicycles and playing in the sand.
Q: What did you do before becoming an English teacher?
I have had many jobs before becoming a teacher. The longest one was for ten years or so when my husband and I owned a Japanese restaurant in South Africa. After we sold the restaurant, I worked as an operations manager on a wildlife reserve.
Q: What’s your favorite Japanese food?
I absolutely love Japanese food in all its forms. There is no way I could pick a favourite!
Q: Why did you want to live in Japan?
Well I guess the main reason is because my husband is Japanese. He has lived abroad for many years so it was time to return. We also chose to come back because Japan is a safe place to live.

Q：あなたはどこから来ましたか？あなたの母国の好きなところは何ですか？
私は南アフリカ出身です。この国の好きなところはたくさんあります。なので1つを選ぶのはとても難しいですが、特に大好きなものを挙げるとするなら、1つは塩漬けの牛肉にスパイスを加えたビルトンです。非常に人気があり、ラグビーを見ながらワインと一緒に食べるのが最高です！もう1つのお気に入りは、南アフリカでブラーイ、またはバーベキューと呼んでいるものです。素晴らしい天気を楽しみながら外に座って、いろんな種類の肉とサラダをたくさん食べます。
Q：子どもの頃は何を楽しんでいましたか？
子供の頃、ほとんどの時間を屋外で過ごしました。 木に登ったり、自転車に乗ったり、砂遊びをしたりしました。
Q：英語教師になる前に何をしていましたか？
教師になる前には多くの仕事をしました。一番長いものは、夫と一緒に南アフリカで１０年間ほど経営した日本食レストランです。そのレストランを閉じた後は、野生生物保護区の運営管理者としても働きました。
Q：あなたの好きな日本食は何ですか？
全ての日本食が大好きです。1番を選ぶのは無理です！
Q：どうしてあなたは日本に住みたかったのですか？
主な理由は、夫が日本人だからだと思います。彼は長年海外に住んでいましたが、帰国することになり、日本は安全な街なので戻ってきました。
